Pharmacy tech field projected for rapid growth

Labor experts report that pharmacy technicians will be one of the hottest professions over the next several years and the number of workers is expected to grow by 32 percent over the next decade.

While pharmacy technicians are in high demand, pharmacies and healthcare agencies are looking for professionally trained technicians that have the right type of knowledge to get the job done right.They want well-rounded individuals that not only know how to read prescription labels and drug information, but also can work well with patients and customers that have questions, concerns and comments.

Today’s pharmacy technicians are required to multitask and customers have a lot of expectations when they come into the pharmacy, many of which were not in the job description just a few decades ago. Today’s pharmacy technicians are required to be knowledgeable about insurance information, handle store coupons, and enforce federal drug guidelines and work as cashiers.

There is also a customer service component to being a pharmacy technician because customers will often poise questions they have about their medication, including known side effects, dosage levels and benefits of a particular drug over another.
